Thanks, wbmw, for a reasonable response to my post last week about Opteron/Barcelona vs. Clovertown/Tigerton frequency scaling.

At least we have some numbers now. It appears that for SPECint_rate on 4S platforms, AMD scales by 70% vs frequency while Tigerton scales by 51.5%. That's based on spec.org vs spec.org for Tigerton 214 @2933MHz and 192 @2400 MHz -- 51.6% scaling.

Drilling into the AMD scores, there's
2.5GHz 188 amd.com
2.0GHz 160 spec.org
70% scaling.

So, despite having 4 cores, Barcelona continues to scale as well as Opteron -- 70%. This probably is mostly due to memory controller enhancements, higher cache bandwidth, L3 and memory access re-ordering. It will probably require PC6400 to stay at the 70% level in SPECint_rate above 2.5 GHz.

It would take a Barcelona frequency of 2.9 GHz to "catch up" to the 130W Tigerton 4S result at 2.93 GHz.
