WOW. That's a definite no win situation, John. WHY on earth would the US spend the lives of it's Military, and the money and resources it will take to help rebuild Iraq, and allow an "openly anti-American regime" to come to power.

Precisely my point. That's why the Iraqis will only be able to have governments which are client governments for the foreseeable future. Hardly genuine democracy.

As for the German-French argument, the justifications offered for the Marshall plan were to stave off Russian influence. I don't ever recall, though it could have been the case in Italy, that the US government got involved, at least publicly, in the selection of governments in Germany and France. What they may have done on the qt is, obviously, not known.

And France and Germany can hardly be said to have a socialist mind set. Good conservative that Chirac is and good social democrat the Schroeder is, neither is even close to socialism.
