Hi HandsOn,

If you're ISP is telling you that you NEED V.90 to log-on, they're going to lose alot of subscriptions.

The standard today is still 33.6. 56k is more and more popular, and comes with practically all new computers, but all ISP's should still support the lower speeds/protocols.

I don't recognize the modem part number, but if it is x2 as the name implies, it already is 56k, and uses the x2 protocol. The other protocol is Kflex. v.90 came out afterwards and supports both of the older protocols. Some modem manufacturers allow you to download a 'flash' upgrade from their site to ugrade to v.90 (if your modem will support the upgrade). Some will charge for it, others will give it for free.

I would call the people at your ISP again though. There is no reason that you should not be able to connect with an x2 modem. You might not be able to get 56k speed if they don't support it, but you'll still get 33.6.

Check out Digicom's site for modem upgrades:

digicomsys.com

Sounds complicated I know, but don't give up on your current modem.

Good luck,

Richard
