Hedge-fund industry assets eclipse $2 trillion, survey finds Marketwatch - March 29, 2007 1:22 PM ET SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Hedge-fund assets jumped 30% to more than $2 trillion in 2006 as institutional investors continued to pour money into the industry, according to a survey released Thursday by publisher HedgeFund Intelligence. Global hedge fund assets climbed from just over $1.5 trillion in January 2006 to nearly $2.079 trillion this January, the survey found. New money is increasingly coming from institutions like pension funds and endowments, and more than $1 trillion is funnelled through funds of hedge funds, which allocate clients' assets to a range of outside managers, HedgeFund Intelligence said. The U.S. -- and New York in particular -- remains the biggest hedge-fund center. New York firms oversee almost $650 billion in assets, followed by London with $261 billion and Greenwich, Conn., with $103 billion. Still, Europe was the fastest-growing region in terms of hedge-fund assets last year. Assets there grew roughly 40% to $460 billion, the survey found. Big hedge-fund firms continue to dominate the industry: There are now 351 firms managing more than $1 billion. They have combined assets of $1.564 trillion, the publisher noted.
