I recognize that the fact that she had been feeding Butch properly, discarding the hulls of the seed, replenishing the supply, for a long time before she confused empty hulls with seed makes this a peculiar story. It's peculiar to me, too. But for all my crazy mother's faults, she would not have done such a thing on purpose. More likely is that she was depressed and distracted, not remembering particularly when she had fed the canary last, and because the hulls looked like seeds, not being reminded in the ordinary way, by a glance at the cage. |
