matt,

your boot file worked just fine. the computer tried to boot to the d drive. i got the following message:

windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows 2000 root>\system 32\ntoskrnl.exe.
please install a copy of the above file."

i thought i would copy this file from the w2k cd, go into the recover console and copy it to the system 32 directory; however the only "ntoskrnl.exe,"on the cd, was in the "i386" folder. i copied it to a floppy just incase. it was 757kb in size.

i then decided to copy the \system 32\ntoskrnl.exe from the c drive as it is actually in the correct folder. when i tried to copy it to a floppy it was too large at 1.63mb. my cd burner is not running on this drive although maybe i could get it running and copy the file to a cd. i am not sure that there are cd drivers loaded in recovery console.

i am also thinking that if i did manage to copy the ntoskrnl to d drive, there might possibly be more files that are corrupt and they would continue to display one at a time until i got them all replaced.

i have not yet run the recovery console as i really don't see which command would help me. there is a systemroot command but it "Sets the current directory to the systemroot folder of the Windows 2000 installation you are logged on to." it does not say that it actually copies any files.

it seems what would do the job would be an emergency repair disk for drive d. i don't have one. i am going to make a erd for c drive and see if i can alter the path to make it work for d drive. does this make sense?

in regard to the w2k repair/restore utility, are you referring to the recovery console?

belker

edit: w2k repair option. when i ran the setup cd i did not see any repair option. also, would it, if i could access the repair option, would it allow me to pick which drive to repair?
