at $73/share, L3 has a market cap of $10.6 billion. L3 has a crack management team with a proven track record. L3 is planning to build a 20,000 mile state-of-the-art fiber optic network, to be completed in 2001. the construction costs aren't public, nor is the area of coverage, nor is information on what rights-of-way will be used. telecom revenues for 1998 will be nil.

at $36/share, the combined QWST/LCI has a market cap of $11.9 billion. they too have a crack management team with a proven track record. QWST is building a 16,000 mile state-of-the-art fiber optic network using ralroad rights-of-way controlled by the company. the buildout of the network is financed primarily by advance sales of dark fiber capacity on the network, representing less than 5% of the network's maximum fiber capacity. The network will be completed by next Spring. QWST/LCI also advises that it's 1998 telecom revenues will be around $3 billion. WQST/LCI ranks as the nation's fourth largest long-distance carrier with nearly 5% marketshare.

so i have $1000 to invest. why should i choose L3 over QWST?
