Regards motality rate on Spanish Flu 1918 per this link is lower than SARS. It is given as 2.5% whereas ordinary flu is 0.1%.
28% of U.S population had "La Grippe", and 678,000 died over a 2 year period.

Regards milk and food, per my dim recollections, in U.S. you were allowed to open your door and pick up what others left for you.
