I think the focus of the effort was on professors that where considered incorrigible. Whether they where, or whether they were all even that bad in the first place can of course be debated. But even if the effort is some times mistaken, and even potentially harmful, I don't think it is sinister. I don't think it is similar to the situation in Iran, although to be fair the Islamic fundamentalists probably don't think their efforts are sinister either. Still I don't have a problem with the idea of saying that they are wrong. I'm far from being a complete relativist.
