4:22PM SpeedFam-IPEC tops estimates (SFAM) 4.14 -0.04: Reports Q3 (Feb) loss of $0.34 per share, $0.08 better than the Multex consensus of ($0.42); revenues fell 57.3% year/year to $25.1 mln vs the $22.0 mln consensus.

4:13PM Solectron in supply chain services agreement with Juniper Networks (SLR) 7.00 -0.41: Co announces it has been selected by JNPR to provide manufacturing services for its G10 Cable Modem Termination System; this agreement expands SLR and JNPR's manufacturing services partnership, which began in 1997. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

2:13PM Newport Corp estimates cut by USB Piper Jaffray (NEWP) 21.90 -0.49: Has turned defensive following USB Piper Jaffray intraday estimate cuts. Firm lowered FY02 est to $0.05 from $0.15 and FY03 to $0.65 from $0.75. (Consensus estimates are $0.07 and $0.60). Firm cites timing of a positive turn in Newport's semiconductor equipment business as well as continued difficult conditions within fiber optics. USB continues to like NEWP shares as an excellent way to play the recovery occurring in the semiconductor market.

1:17PM Nanometrics (NANO) 19.41 +0.05: This loosely watched manufacturer of thin film metrology systems for semi flat panel displays (5 analysts currently cover NANO) has turned in a shaky 12-month performance; shares are up 20% following a roller-coaster ride. Stock appears poised to move off $19 level today; Soundview writes that "NANO remains on track to meet/beat their ($0.16) est." Notes that business with AMAT is still relatively flat, but stresses that other integrated metrology customers are on the horizon. Firm would be buyers at these levels and dubs the lag in the share price vs. others in the group as unwarranted.
