MPT Studies Digital TV with 720
Scanning Lines

October 23, 1997 (TOKYO) -- Japan's
Telecommunications Technology Council, an advisory group
for the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, started deliberations
on the 720P progressive scanning method for digital satellite
broadcasting slated to start in 2000.

The council, which began its deliberations on the 720P on Oct. 15,
announced in September that it would adopt the 1080I, which has
1,080 scanning lines and interlaced scanning, the 480P with progressive
scanning and the 480I (equivalent to NTSC) as interlaced methods for
the broadcasting.

Although the 720P had not been included in the interlaced scanning
methods originally proposed by a specialist group of the council, the
group decided to study it following a report by its secretariat, the MPT,
which also recommended the 720P.

On Oct. 15 a council working group was given a presentation of the
720P and 1080P by key personnel from the computer industry.

The ministry said it aims to firm up its conclusions on the 720P by the
end of 1997.
