A potential ceo can be groomed as you describe yet find his strengths and learn to be his own man. I see Obama's problems as being similar to Bill Clintons - he's a people pleaser. He learned how to play the black identity card where it helped him with the black community, while talking the "bargainer's stance" with the white community. Did he ever, in the middle of all this, figure out who is Barak Obama and is there anything he wants more than the next rung on the ladder?

Some guys just come equipped with intelligence, charm, confidence and overweening ambition. Just look at the young FDR (he also had the family money and background to propel him forward, but in today's meritocratic society you can do without if you're good enough). Somehow, FDR just knew he was born to be President even though everyone around him considered him a lightweight. Yet he did well as Asst. Sec of the Navy and made it to the national ticket as VP in 1920 when he was only 38.

Roosevelt was deepened by his struggles after he had polio, to regain his legs, and when he couldn't, to regain his career anyway in an era when cripples were expected to retire to the country and collect stamps. He maintained his contacts with Tamany Hall and was elected as a reformist governor of NY in 1928. The rest of his story is well known.

I don't know if Obama has ever been deepened by anything. I don't know if there is any mission that really drives him, except his own ambition.

Of course, you can make the same point about Hillary and I will readily agree. But at least I feel I know where she's coming from.
