Iraq’s War of Perception: This week’s Creators Syndicate column

Austin Bay Blog

<< “Who is Jamil Hussein?” >>

I wrote the column just as the fight between Multi National Corps-Iraq and the Associated Press was beginning to boil. It is now past boil.

The column makes the case (again) for a new National News Council. < Ed: Iraqi MOI briefer said today... Jamil Hussein is not a policeman... >

For years I have supported forming a National News Council — in part because I knew and respected Norman Isaacs, the man who ran the Council for five years. (The Council existed from 1973-83.)

I also know what a “professional clearing house” like the News Council can do for press credibility.

I now compare a “news council-type investigatory group” to policemen putting videocameras on their vehicles. An overwhelming percentage of the time the videocams support the policeman’s version of events. I think a news council would back up the good, ethical reporters — and encourage the aggressive pursuit of the truth.

But back to Jamil Hussein. The Iraqi MOI briefer said today that Hussein does not work for the Ministry of Interior — meaning Police Captain Jamil Hussein is not a policeman.

From the Iraqi press statement (from an emailed transcript):

<<< For example, we have some of the respected news outlets that deal with news fast and have a relation with many TV channels and the media in general, who distributed a story quoting a person called Jamil Hussein. Afterward, we searched our sources in our staff for anyone by this name — maybe he wore an MOI uniform and gave a different name to the reporter for money. And the second name used is Lt. Maythem.

However, all of you know that the ministry of interior has a large public affairs office and its official spokesman, and we are ready to answer any questions you may have. Therefore, you should contact MOI PAO for all your needs to get real, true news. Based on that, we strongly deny any relation with those two names. In order to serve you better and strengthen the relationship with MOI, do not take statements that have no meaning and do not represent any official. We would like this note to be helpful to you and any statement made by those persons to be ignored. >>>

At the moment I don’t have a link.
