Should world conditions spike the price of oil (MidEast war etc?) it gives us another option. Plus it lets American companies benefit instead of foreign rivals. More money for us and more strategic power.

I sometimes think it might be better to let the Chinese have the tar sand oil directly (instead of us selling it to them thru exporting) as it would give them an energy security blanket and make them less likely to start a war with SE Asia Nations over energy rights in the South China Sea.
