We followed the same "cloth diapers" approach that you did. However, the "high heaven" factor was avoided by first flushing away the "solid contents" and then immersing the soiled garment in a bucket of Milton (?), or similar, with a tight fitting lid. We saved a fortune when one considers the cost of a disposables where 10 to 12 were required per day.
