Grace, that is so true, and I think explains why US consumers have spent more than they've made for most of the last 6 years (or more??). They pay $1000 on their old bills but charge $1100 on some new stuff. And since the new stuff is borrowed, what you said holds, I think -- that it isn't a top "want" because the credit is so easy there's no need to be particularly discriminating.
