The benefit (which republicans extoll) of having parents, is that if they aren't worked to death, they might actually have a hand in raising their children. If, on the other hand, you force low income parents to work several jobs, in order to have "luxuries" like shelter, food and health care- you take the crucial input of a parent out of the loop for many children. In our family (of two college educated adults) we made sacrifices so I could stay home with our 3 children- but my husband is a well paid engineer. The sacrifices we made aren't within reach of the lower middle class and the poor.

I set great store in work. I've always said here that I think people need work, in order to feel a part of society. If you are a parasite, I think that has to weigh on you, at some level- unless you are a moron (and I grant you, there are too many of those.) But just as I don't approve of layabouts (of any age) I also don't approve of working people to death.
