Azimov gets the big nods, but I think Bradbury was the better author and thinker. I always thought Azimov was unreadable rubbish.

One of the reasons the NASA model plan for Mars was costed out at 400 or 500 bills was because it was a "Battlestar Galactica" plan. Build a gigantic mothership in LEO with enough fuel to power it out of LEO into a long Mars trajectory, put the ship into orbit, and return to Earth. Holy money cow.

One of the things NASA adopted from Zubrin's Mars Direct plan was in situ fuel production on Mars. Only have to carry fuel to get there, and you send the reactor and the fuel generation equipment ahead of the astronauts. No Battlestar Galactica required. So in some respects, it is a "one way mission."
