Nokia Phone Unit To Hold Press Conference Friday
Tuesday September 3, 9:24 am ET

STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- Nokia Corp.'s mobile phone unit will hold a press conference Friday amid speculation that the world's largest phone manufacturer is preparing to introduce new color-screen models.

The press conference will be held at 1300 GMT in Marseille, France, where Nokia is sponsoring a snowboarding and entertainment event this weekend, a company spokesman said.

In a research note Tuesday, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein said it expects Nokia to unveil a color-screen version of its popular 3300 series of phones.

Nokia, which makes one of every three mobile phones sold worldwide, has promised to have at least 10 color-screen phones on the market by the end of the year.

It has shown six color-screen models so far, including three versions of its Communicator personal organizers. Those three, plus the 7650 camera phone, are already on the market.

Nokia is set to release an update next Tuesday on its financial expectations for the third quarter, which ends Sept. 30.

Nokia has said it expects a surge in phone sales during the fourth quarter, which is typically the strongest, thanks to the holiday selling season. Analysts say the success of Nokia's new models is crucial if the company is to meet its full-year financial targets.
