How widespread was the support of the Kahane in the 1970s? I don't know but they were not a small org.

They where a pretty small group. A lot smaller then the PLO/PLA or Hammas. They where opposed by the Israeli government and never had the kind of support from the Israeli population that the PLO/PLA and Hammas have from Palestinians.

terrorismanswers.com has some info.

Marginal does not mean small. Israel did not outlaw the Kahane terrorists until 1994. That would suggest the org. had the tacit approval of the Israeli gov't until that point. They certainly were not unknown to the Israeli gov't prior to that. The Israelis are clever......they do what serves them at the moment. When it works to their advantage, terrorism is an acceptable tool.
