VIRACEPT OUTSELLS CRIXIVAN IN THIRD QUARTER

" Viracept outsells Crixivan in the third quarter. Merk's third quarter results were released last week. Crixivan (Mrk's leading HIV protease inhibitor) sales in the U.S. were down sequentially from second quarter. Below are the three quarters of sales of Viracept and Crixivan since Viracept's introduction in late march 87. On Merk's quarterly conference call, management mentioned the reason for the sequential down quarter was the shift in distribution from a single pharmacy (i.e. Stadtlander's) to national retail phamacies. Merk never mentioned competition as a reason for the shortfall. Nonetheless, the numbers speak for themselves. It is also important to mention that of Crixivan's $1333 million in quarterly sales, foreign sales were almost 47% of the total. Viracept should be introduced in Europe beggining calendar 1998 and will be co-marketed by Roche (which sells the #3 protease inhibitor Invirase). We should mention that Viracept is priceed 25-30% higher than Crixivan, hence Agouron's unit sales are probably still below that of Merk. The trends, however, are quite apparent."
