Petraeus Says Basra Offensive Was a Disappointment
WSJ WASHINGTON WIRE
In Global

Susan Davis reports on Congress.

Leading members of the Senate Armed Services Committee pressed Gen. David Petraeus to assess a March military offensive ordered by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in the city of Basra that left 700 dead and more than 1,500 wounded. ?Was it a disappointment?? asked Sen. John McCain, the committee?s ranking Republican. ?It was, although it is not over yet,? replied Petraeus.

Democrats on the panel estimated the Basra offensive was a military failure and raised questions about the U.S. mission in Iraq. ?We?re over in Iraq to take on al Qaeda and here we have the Maliki government taking on inner-sectarian violence,? said Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Petraeus acknowledged recent escalation in attacks in the Baghdad?s fortified Green Zone and said there were still fights begin waged in the city of Mosul against al Qaeda and extremist Sunni groups.
