A "show" means that the drilling samples brought up from that particular depth indicated the presence of gas in that particular formation. There are several ways to discern the presence of gas in drilling samples, the one I'm familiar with is the fluorescent method. Gas is just what its name implies - gas - and it's chemical composition is usually methane. The gas is often the "cap" on an oil formation - being a lighter hydrocarbon, it rises to the top of the trap made by the formation. Its ability to flow depends on the the porosity and permeability of the formation, just as does oil. Hope this helps.
