George:

In your piece entitled "The Fiber Baron" in the WSJ (10/6/97), you stated that the established phone companies only hope in competition with WorldCom is to "go for a wireless local loop based on Qualcomm's CDMA technology." I agree that much of the Fortune 1000 business will be skimmed from the Baby Bells by people like Bernie Ebbers, but as far as higher speed data offerings for millions of residential and small business customers, it seems to me that a huge opportunity still exists in the form of high speed access (xDSL) over copper. Every forward-thinking business person knows that survival depends upon being hooked into the net and doing business electronically. If the RBOCs can simply get moving with deployment of high speed data on their existing lines, they can exploit their installed base, compete and win.

Regards.
