From the 2nd qtr press release:

"These results are in line with management's expectations. Because our expenditures continue to be tightly controlled and potential revenues from licensing fees and milestones biased to the second half as in 1997, we expect the second half of 1998 to help balance our overall results for the year," according to Paul V. Maier, Ligand senior vice president and chief financial officer.

What does "balance our overall results for the year" mean?
