I think Frum handles this very well.

You know, Bill, while reading stuff posted here I am often reminded of the test the civil service used to give applicants back in the days when it was still legal to test applicants to see if they had the wherewithal to do the job, the PACE. One type of question on that test was a short article followed by the question as to the main point of the article. I remember thinking at the time that those were incredibly easy questions and, therefore, a waste of time to ask. Surely everyone got them right. I have since realized that people quite often miss the point entirely.

Kakutani's "howling rage" was all about the tone of the book, not the substance. Frum didn't address that at all but rather he either assumed she was taking exception to the substance of the book's message or he deliberately changed the subject so he could speechify. If he was deliberately changing the subject, I suppose you could say he handled it very well since it would be painful for him to address her actual message.

<<nuance being a euphemism for “accommodationist.”>>

Gee, that pains me. Another perfectly good word bites the dust because it's been co-opted as code. Guess I'm going to have to hit the thesaurus for a substitute word to use when I'm taking about actual nuance, something that I value.
