Here's another book about the early days of Smokejumping. amazon.com

It details the Mann Gulch Fire, which is the deadliest incident in smokejumper history. The lone survivor, Wag Dodge, was a man I had met. I was a kid at the time.

Norman McLean, the author, also wrote "A River Runs Through It."

It's not available any more, although I have a copy that I got on eBay, but "Red Skies of Montana" was an early movie about smokejumping starring Richard Widmark and Richard Boone. As a kid, I watched some of it being filmed. Widmark's role was loosely based on Wag Dodge. imdb.com

It had some pretty hoaky scenes, but it's an enjoyable yarn.

Personally, I would never jump out of a perfectly good airplane.
