Meathead was trying to get away from a working class background. Obama was trying to seek one, at least the black South Side version.

Very nice point. Obama was seeking a black South Side version and the Reverend Wright experience is showing the problem of that career track. It worked great to get into local politics in Chicago but doesn't play as well on the national scene. Kerry also sought out a military experience for political purposes. It clearly didn't fit very well with him either.
