James, IEEE 1394 is simply USB for high-speed applications (video).
It is not "intelligent I/O" in any way, i.e there is no I/O processor
managing the data transfers, as in I2O. Neither USB nor IEEE 1394
competes with I2O. In fact, IEEE 1394 (aka FireWire) *could* end up
being combined with I2O, given its high data rates. In this senario,
the IEEE 1394 interface is managed under I2O just like a disk array
or network interface.
