I checked the Ampex homepage, they have recently updated their "employment opportunities" list:

-Manufacturing Engineer

The individual will be an integral and critical member of the team and will participate in setting technical direction, developing new concepts, as well as interacting with a wide variety of potential disc drive customers.
-Corporate Attorney
-Software Design Test Engineer
-Test Engineer
-Senior Software Engineer (UNIX Device Driver Developer) - Requires BSEE/CS (MS preferred) as well as experience in the development of UNIX device drivers. In-depth knowledge of C and UNIX. Multi-platform experience such as Sun/Solaris, IBM/AIX, SGI/IRIX, DEC/Digital Unix and HP/HP-UX is preferred. Understanding of tape-based i/o devices is desired.
-Senior Software Engineer (Real Time Firmware) - You will work as a team member on the Firmware Development team for AMPEX automated cartridge library systems to assist the product development cycle. Responsibilites - Design and implement low level code module, implement test scripts to assist the product development cycle and implement tools for the project management environment. After becoming familiar with the existing development environment, you will be an active design member in the next library system. You must be able to work with prototype hardware and primitive real time environment. Familiar with software and hardware debugging tools and documentation tools.

Looks to me like Ampex is gearing up for future production. In regards to patents, it's only a matter of time before they go after companies infringing on their 8mm magnetic recording patents, which would be a good source of revenue if they succeed in the litigation, considering the vast amount of 8mm video products sold.
