Greg, I'd like to add my humble opinion concerning the causes of
inflation back in the 1970's and early 80's. Monetary policy may
have contributed to its severity and duration but the root cause
was oil prices. From $3.00 a barrel to over $40.00. It was a
unique and killer economic force. It seems that the obvious
inflationary effect of increased energy cost on the worlds economies
back then has been unnecessarily complicated and confused by
politicians, economists and people in general who for whatever
reason have forgotten that simple fact.I laugh to myself when
I hear people comment( usually republicans) that Jimmy Carter
caused inflation. I guess he could have stopped it by invading
the middle-east and nationalized the oil fields. A bit radical
a choice but the only one I can think of that would have stabilized
or lowered oil prices. The rise of oil prices in 1972 and throughout
the 70's was the overwhelming factor in the increase in inflation.
A situation that is not likely to repeat, since OPEC has lost
whatever uninimity it once briefly had.

Oil has had some ( not always positive) affect on the great state of
Alaska's evolution the past 20 odd years, no?
