Error: HIMEM.Sys has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 0200200E.

if you see the message “ERROR: HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address XXXX:XXXXh. XMS driver not installed”, the memory-testing feature of Himem.sys has issued your memory a flunking grade and will not load.

According to Microsoft, testing errors can happen for the following reasons:

defective cache memory on the system board (external cache)
motherboard is unable to run at the correct speed
bad or mismatched main memory chips
wrong A20 handler
To determine which is the cause of the error, first disable the motherboard’s cache memory. This is referred to as External Cache or Level 2 (L2) cache. This is done by changing the Cache memory setting in the computer’s ROM BIOS. On the AMI BIOS, this setting is found in the Advanced Setup (Advanced CMOS) screen. If this fixes the problem, replace cache memory chips, or replace the motherboard if replacing the cache chips doesn’t work. (For information on changing your computer’s BIOS settings, check your system’s documentation.)

Next, try disabling other speed-related BIOS settings, including Turbo mode and Fast A20/Fast Gate A20. Then, check that Himem.sys is using the proper A20 handler. Call the manufacturer for help, if necessary. Finally, make sure you are using the proper speed of memory chips on the system board. Memory is rated in nanoseconds (ns); the smaller the number, the faster the chips. If you have a mixture of speeds on the system board, ensure that slower chips are accessed first by the system. This will tell the system to access all memory at the slower speed. If faster chips are placed first, Himem.sys will have problems.

If you want to disable testing of memory with Himem.sys, make sure your ROM BIOS is set to test it for you. You can disable testing in the Config.sys file with

Device=C:\dos\Himem.sys / testmem:off
Disabling XMS memory testing may allow HIMEM.SYS to load, but you may experience random file corruption, system instability, or other problems until the underlying hardware problem is resolved.
