Exodus has been in this business for several years - Intel is getting in the application hosting business (which is different) for several reasons customer are having difficulty differentiating between a celeron and a pentium III or for that matter a Xeon - very bad news for Intel. AMD Athlon - again, not good for Intel and a general need to capitalize upon new markets and growth rates that its core business cannot provide - something i applaud. There is little reason to believe that Intel dominance as a chip vendor for pc's gives it real advantage as an ASP - their announcment that they would provide Sun servers as well as Intel servers is a proof point that they arent in any position to set standards - and in fact have to compete on a set of metrics which have nothing to do with their core business - i.e - availability, scalability, services, data center management. whether or not many .com companies make it or not after this somewhat historic time doesnt reflect poorly on Sun, if a shakeout happens which of course it will new players and opportunies will be created.
