I am so sorry. What an awful thing to have happen. I hope something wonderful happens to make up for it. Maybe those million dollar sweepstakes folks are on their way to YOUR house right now.

And of course you are right- it would be nice if everyone could be kind to everyone all the time. But having had the luxury of being beautiful once I have to say that it was pretty nice. People gave me things for free, offered me all sorts of perks- I felt a bit guilty (but not enough to really spoil the pleasure) and I have also been wildly rewarded for my intelligence (and as I haven't actually produced much it seems to me I ought to feel guilty about that too. And the little boys and girls in special ed will NEVER be rewarded in those ways. It just won't happen. Their parents try to make life somewhat normal for them- but at the same time they are setting up trust funds and scrambling to find relatives who will stand in to be guardians for these kids when they (the parents) are gone. Most of them can't play sports- they have coordination, language and mobility problems, and several of the boys my son knows will never even learn to read or do simple math. There just isn't much in store for them in a global sense- that doesn't mean they don't find their lives rewarding- but if their parents weren't affluent and working REALLY hard, thier lives would not be happy. I guess I figure that when you are born "normal" it is such a HUGE gift, such a miracle really, that everything else sort of pales in comparison. Now that does not mean I do not have empathy for beautiful people in pain- but perhaps I think they could benefit by thinking more about what they have- but then that's probably true of most of us.
