All of this depends on having the correct premises. If I turn out to be working on false premises, I will lose money, no matter, how good my modeling.

Sounds to me like this strategy is a good candidate for paper trading. If you find that you can be consistently successful, great! The only thing you've lost is the opportunity to earn more than the riskless rate. If not then you will have gained valuable experience on the cheap. Either way your portfolio will be higher than it was when you started. I, for one, wouldn't implement any strategy using real money unless I have complete confidence and understanding in it.
