CDMA Continues Rapid Expansion as Worldwide Usage Raises Subscriber Totals to More Than 65 Million
World's Fastest Growing Wireless Standard Dominates Asia Pacific Region and Further Extends Presence in Latin America and European Markets
COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2000-- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) Monday announced that the use of CDMA technology continues its pace, doubling worldwide usage compared to 1999.
Subscriber numbers climbed to more than 65 million during the second quarter of 2000. The latest figures demonstrate CDMA's market dominance in the Asia Pacific region and rapid growth throughout Latin America, further solidifying the technology's position as one of the top two wireless standards.
With the deployment of third-generation services (3G) rapidly approaching -- including high-speed mobile Internet access as well as full multimedia capabilities -- the CDG expects the demand for wireless Internet and information services to continue its upward momentum, substantially increasing CDMA technology's global presence in the future.
``The use of CDMA by global operators in extremely competitive multi-technology markets, such as North and South America and Asia, is indicative of the technology's ability to deliver the most advanced services,'' said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG.
``Operators on every major continent have chosen CDMA as their technology for 3G. In fact, two of Korea's largest wireless operators, SK Telecom and KT Freetel, have announced that they are preparing to launch the world's first commercial 3G services using cdma2000, as early as this year.''
From June 1999 to June 2000, CDMA subscribers increased 96 percent reaching more than 23 million in North America, while the Asia Pacific region maintained its dominant position with 33 million. Latin America experienced the strongest growth by increasing 346 percent, followed by a 183 percent increase in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
CDMA provides mobile operators and manufacturers the ability to offer a variety of value-added services today, such as wireless Internet and information services. In addition, CDMA technology benefits wireless consumers with industry-leading in-building penetration, longer battery talk and standby time, increased privacy and better security.
