MM,
I have tried a few macro programs, starting with a 16-bit 'recorder' program that came with Win3.1, then EZMacros for a while, and a couple of other trial versions. The one I settled on is Macro Express, I tried the newest version but I went back to version ME 2000 v2.1f. It is still on their website. macros.com
I am running W2000 also, and I haven't found anything that Macro Express does wrong. It launches the usual applications, it launches old 16-bit programs in the command window, it launches Windows Explorer panes sized and positioned like a custom file manager. It has its own timer so it gives me once-a-month pop-up text reminders or steers me to the Word-a-Day website. The ones I use the most are for navigating SI pages, for example it finds the link on the page for the next 10 messages and clicks it for me. Since I am unbelievably lazy, the labor this saves is in my opinion actually worth while. <G>
You could write a macro using the self-contained timer, that would do the things you require unattended. This program seems to be well-behaved and dependable. I have no connection with the company.
