Handspring to launch new Visors on Monday

PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANT maker Handspring is planning to
launch the latest additions to its Visor range of PDAs on Monday, according
to company sources.

The company will unveil two new devices at a press conference in Tokyo on
Monday morning. Jeff Hawkins, co-founder of Mountain View, Calif.-based
Handspring and one of the founders of Palm Computing, will be on hand along
with Shigeki Komiyama, general manager of the company's Japanese affiliate,
Handspring Japan, to present the new computers.

Their launch will come as the Japanese PDA market is getting increasingly
crowded.

At the end of August Sony launched its first PDA based on the Palm OS. The
Clie comes in both monochrome and color versions in Japan -- although in
monochrome only in the United States -- and is being sold as an accessory for
the audio-visual or entertainment-conscious consumer, a market segment so
far largely ignored by Handspring.

Other competition is also on the horizon. At the CEATEC electronics show in
Japan, Sharp was showing off a model of its latest Zaurus PDA, due to be
launched in November and much more Palm-like in appearance than previous
models. Sanyo Electric was showing working prototypes of new PDAs based
on the EPOC OS from Britain's Symbian.
