I saw some post mortems of the 2004 exit polls which tried to explain why they had been so wrong. I don't exactly remember their conclusion, but one of their strong possibilities was that Kerry enthusiasts gamed the system, presenting themselves more eagerly to the pollsters. Whether this was deliberate or just an emergent behavior I don't remember if the article said.
