Unfortunately (!) the lack of quality argument used as an excuse no longer holds up in the US market, where the Hyundai has been reported all the way up in quality comparable to Toyota. The Japanese still don't drive it.

As for the Koreans driving Japanese cars, that's yet another story.
Given the choice between low quality and at the bottom line rather expensive US cars or Japanese cars with no other alternatives - unless being loaded enough to drive DBs and BMWs - that is what they used to drive and most likely still drive.
Unless they already got their first Hyundai Korean quality car or the "bang-for-the-buck" cheaper alternative KIA.

The Koreans have always been great imitators of Japanese quality product. Just check the Hyundai logo from behind next time you have a chance...sure looks a lot like Honda, doesn't it??
