Set-top device sides actively being chosen ... but are AAPL & IBM absent ?

Hope AAPL doesn't resort to providing "open" source as its marketing strategy again (like QT) if it misses this market .

It 's like Pee Wee Herman losing control of his bike in "P W's Great Adventure" and after he crashes into a hedge he says "I meant to do that" :

" Special Report: America Online is considering the Linux operating system as one option for running an inexpensive Internet access device, according to sources familiar with the project.

One source said America Online has approached Compaq Computer as a possible manufacturer of a Linux-based AOL access device....

... AOL isn't alone in considering Linux.

Consumer electronics powerhouse Sony is in "initial discussions" with Linux seller Caldera Systems about "how they can embed Linux into some of their consumer line of products," said Benoy Tamang, vice president of marketing at Caldera Systems.

"Everyone's turning rabid looking in at the possibilities."

Hope the 3 AAPL Zecks who visited Japan MacWorld didn't strike out at Sony , if that's why they were there .

On QT , George Lucas may singlehandedly make up for AAPL's late start and make QT yet a player with Star Wars .

More importantly IBM ships its PowerPC set-top chip this August . Seems a natural for a Mac OS version , but ya never no !
