Somehow I would never say luck and investments in the same sentence but then again let's say that at this point and time, you are correct in your assessment of MSFT's market cap and dominance.

If I remember history's grandest lesson from the 1970's when IBM was also in the same seat as MSFT, I know that MSFT will NOT maintain their current position. We all know that to be true which is why MSFT is spending billions on R&D.

What will happen when MSFT does not own 95% of the PC market? Can they survive? How will their applications fare when the playing field is level and they don't have a closer tie to the underlying OS?

Will they be successful in turning MS OFFICE into the Groupware Holy Grail they hope it to be? Or are they really just doing the best they can with what they have for now until something better comes along?

From where I sit, Novell IS fighting the odds but not because of technical ineptitude, lack of products or even lack of direction. They are fighting that same ingnorance which plagues many people who do not know what really is at heart in this play -- that try as they might, Novell can never play the PR game as well as Microsoft.

By the way, if SI can make money on my opinions, so be it. Everyone is entitled to make their share, I'm glad for the opportunity and the forum to have my say. America is grand like that, you can have your say and someone can make $$ from it :)

Anyway, I really do hope Windows 2000 is what MSFT has hyped it to be (scalable and reliable to compare with UNIX) because the hoodwinked are finally starting to wake up and see the light.
