LDAP is still a very "lightweight" and not ready for serious inter-Directory operations. LDAP is missing a couple key technology solutions missing. The biggest is replication capability. This limitation does not allow directories to keep each other up-to-date.

Almost no DS product that is scalable can use LDAP a a protocol within its own DS. Novell's DS is an example of it. Almost all DS's use a proprietary DS protocol because LDAP's lack of technology maturity.

BUT - both Novell and IBM and MSFt and NSCP and any other DS vendor will use LDAP to inter-link. Again, because of LDAP's limitation, true DS inter-connection cannot be effectively provided. That is why new meta-directory synch. tools are showing up to take up the slack until LDAP has that ability. NOVL is on the panel to make the next generation LDAP provide this capabilities. Look who wrote the draft to the LDAP replication draft to IETF...
