NEC Computer Systems Division (NEC CSD) of Packard Bell NEC, Inc. today introduces the Versa(TM) 2780MT, the newest addition to the Versa 2700 Series. The Versa 2780MT integrates Intel's 233MHz Pentium(R) Processor, 512KB L2 cache, a built-in 20X maximum CD-ROM drive, a built-in floppy disk drive and a 56Kbps modem in an all-in-one package starting at $3,299. NEC CSD designed the Versa 2700 Series for small to medium business enterprises, corporate value customers and individual professionals who require the convenience and ease of use of an all-in-one notebook computer. The 2700 Series, or Mobile Convenience line, offers simplified computing by integrating the CD-ROM, floppy disk drive and modem.

One Box Design for Maximum Power Anywhere
At the heart of the Versa 2780MT notebook computer is the 233MHz Intel Pentium processor with MMX technology, 512KB of Level 2 cache and 16MB of EDO DRAM (expandable to 128MB) to provide the computing power demanded by today's business applications.
To take advantage of this power, especially its comprehensive multimedia capabilities, every Versa 2780MT notebook computer features an active-matrix TFT (thin-film transfer), 12.1-inch display driven by 2MB of video RAM with the ability to show 64K colors at a resolution of 800 x 600.
Additional features that distinguish the Versa 2780MT are hard drive sizes of either 2.1GB, 3.2GB, 4.0GB (December), and a lithium-ion battery in every system. Battery life may be up to four hours, depending on usage. The 32-bit PC CardBus specification gives PC Cards access to PCI bandwidth providing higher data throughput and enabling the use of cards like high-performance 10/100MB network PC Cards, plug-in camera cards plus video capture and decompression.
Comprehensive Multimedia
The audio subsystem boasts Yamaha 3-Dimensional surround sound and 16-bit Sound Blaster(R) PRO audio supporting MIDI and WAV files for clear, powerful sound. This sound is pumped through Pioneer speakers: two in the base of the display and a subwoofer underneath. Three ports -- line in, headphone and microphone -- complete the audio package.
Maximum Communications Capabilities
Keeping with the ''all-in-one'' concept, NEC CSD includes today's fastest modem, a K56flex 56Kbps-capable, in every Versa 2780MT notebook computer. The unit can download data at nearly ISDN speeds while uploading at the industry-leading 33.6 Kbps. It also has fax send/receive capability and can function as a full duplex speaker phone, answering machine and voice-mail system. QuickLink software is included with the Versa 2780MT notebook computers to allow the user immediate access to these features. The included modem offers investment protection thanks to the ability to download operating code to keep up with the evolving 56Kbps standards.
Investment protection is also evident in the inclusion of a USB port. Rounding out the communications features is a Fast Infrared (FIR) transceiver which, along with the included LapLink for Windows software, eliminates the need for cables when transferring information with another infrared-equipped computer, handheld computer (H/PC) or printer.
Convenience in Design and Operation
The NEC Versa 2780MT was designed for ease of use, from the full-size, 85-key keyboard with a responsive 3mm stroke, to the VersaGlide touchpad pointing device on the palmrest, which supports double-tap and drag-lock functions.
The Versa 2780MT is equipped with ports for connecting an external monitor, printer, keyboard or pointing device (an optional Y-connector allows for both), audio line in, headphones, microphone, USB device and serial device. The optional PortBar 2700 replicates the notebook's ports (adding a second PS/2 mouse/keyboard connector) and provides one-step desktop connection to peripheral resources for only $159.
For customer convenience, choices in pre-loaded software beginning with the operating system: Windows 95, and offering Windows NT Workstation 4.0. Intel LANDesk(R) Client Manager is pre-installed for user setup to allow networked Versa 2780MT notebooks to be managed remotely. Anti-virus security is provided through a pair of McAfee programs: VirusScan and WebScan.
The Versa 2780MT notebook computers ships with Windows 95 and also includes the ''Microsoft bundle,'' with: Microsoft Word 97, Microsoft Works 4.0A, Microsoft Schedule +, Microsoft Money 97 5.0, Microsoft Encarta, Microsoft Arcade 1.0, Best of Microsoft Entertainment Pack, Microsoft Greetings Workshop and Microsoft Return of Arcade. Quicklink Message Center III, the Official Airline Guide with commercial-airline schedules, LapLink communications, and MediaMatics MPEG ARCADE software is also bundled with each systems that ships with Windows 95.
