Jon, just because you don't see the application, doesn't mean there doesn't exists a customer driven demand for this type of storage. One of the bigget reasons corporations are demanding this feature, is for security/convience reasons. Accounting departments which run on a workgroup system, for example, needs(wants) to back up data three to four times a day for their D.O.S. data, without modifying the whole database. (Daily Order Staus) They need a "module" saved.
Simple schematic--sales data is transmitted to workgroup 1. Workgroup 1 needs to "format" data for specific management report. This new database for workgroup 1 only needs(wants) to back up this data, for comparisons/history of requested report. I'll admit, this may be an extremely over simplified example, but brevity prevails.
Another example is with EDI order processing, and the saving of shipping confirmations throughout the day. There are many more applications.(each workgroup station, could as many do, handle specific products, or geographic locations, and funnel data in to the main/controlling server.
