Stanton has to sell GSM - that's what he has in inventory. That's the big synergy - the big advantage - with being absorbed by DT. They share the GSM world standard..

US GSM and TDMA players will be an entertaining "tell" next year.

The GPRS upgrade is relatively inexpensive. I don't recall seeing upgrade schedules for, say, AWE or VSTR, but they may well exist. We know that GPRS will start at about 20kbs. We know that 1x, scheduled for next year, will start at 7 times that.

I recently read that the upgrade to EDGE costs 10-15(poor memory) times more than the upgrade to GPRS. And, by all appearances, EDGE remains a wet dream.

How can US GSM and TDMA players game this? They must hope that software and applications remain sufficiently limited that the bandwidth doesn't matter.

I think they must hope this is the case, because it's the only hope they have. Applications, of course, is IJ's stated present passion and focus, as QClassic launches SpinCo.

IMode must look attractive for IJ, as designing with code that is browser-based and conversant with wireless IP is far more direct - far more efficient - far more elegant - and offers far more possibilities than WAP's rudimentary code with its inherent limitations.

What could place the greatest pressure on US GSM and TDMA players? An evolved I-Mode in the US.

What would most advantage US GSM and TDMA players? A dominant WAP, with its limitations, in the US.

It's to QCOM's advantage to promote an evolved I-Mode in the US.
