"It's hard to even imagine. The death, the homelessness, the destruction of property and businesses and culture"

And this is just the immediate effects that we know of. Much of southern LA and Mississippi are still black holes. Entire towns have disappeared and, like with the tsunami, the only way to get there is by air, the roads are gone. But, all the helicopters are tied up in New Orleans, so it will be a while before anyone checks on them. With the casinos gone, the state of Mississippi is losing a half a million dollars a day out of a budget that was inadequate to begin with.

And that doesn't even count what disease could do. Will the traditional follow on to hurricanes, cholera, raise its head? It hasn't been the case in decades because sanitation has been restored quickly. But that might not be the case now.

This is likely much worse than 9/11, both in death toll and in economic costs. This is the type of event that can change the course of history. Might not, of course. But holds the potential.
