>>>American Soldier Is Named Time Magazine's `Person of the Year'

Dec. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Time Warner Inc.'s Time magazine chose the American soldier as its ``Person of the Year'' for 2003, for ``defending not only our freedoms but those barely stirring half a world away.''

The choice was made from a list of 20 nominees that included President George W. Bush, former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Many of those under consideration are part of the Bush administration, such as Secretary of State Colin Powell.

The term ``American soldier'' is meant to include all people who serve in the U.S. military and put themselves in harm's way, the publication said.

The magazine's choice is based on both the impact the person had on the news during the year as well as his or her historical significance, Time managing editor Jim Kelly said last month, in announcing the nominees.
