McCain was considered weak on the economic side, and Romney could have helped with that. I think it is quite a stretch to say that Palin didn't alienate many down the middle.

But you are correct that Obama was formidable in terms of the historic nature of the election. Romney as VP would not have offset that. McCain could have looked for a capable and centrist female with an economic background, but instead chose Nutcase.
