Live Picture and Oracle Spotlight Breakthrough Solution for Enhancing Oracle8i Web Sites with High-Impact Zoom Images

E-Commerce Seminars Feature Integration of Live Picture Image Server with Oracle8i, Adding Visual Punch to Database-Driven Web Sites

CAMPBELL, Calif., Oct. 28, 1998 Live Picture, Inc. the leader in Internet imaging, today announced it will join with Oracle Corp. to show e-commerce developers a breakthrough solution for adding dynamic, high-resolution images to Web sites built on Oracle8i, the world's first database for Internet computing. In a nationwide seminar series slated to debut Nov. 4, the two companies will showcase the integration of Live Picture Zoom images with Oracle8i using Oracle® interMedia, the database solution for integrated multimedia. Oracle interMedia provides a direct link between Internet applications developed with Oracle8i, and the award-winning Live Picture® Image Server.

The combination of Live Picture Image Server software, Oracle8i and Oracle interMedia will make it easier to develop database-driven applications enriched by high-quality images, which users can interact with and examine in extreme detail. This capability enables a new generation of Web sites and intranet applications targeted at defense and government organizations, online retailers, publishers, and any company that manages large collections of images. Enhancing Oracle8i applications with high-quality Live Picture images allows Web developers to build visually rich, dynamic Web sites that are far superior to today's static sites using low-resolution GIF and JPEG images stored in operating system files.

Featuring an overview of new solutions built around Live Picture's high-quality Zoom imaging software for Web commerce, the free seminars are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the following cities: Washington DC on Nov. 4, Atlanta on Nov. 6, Chicago on Nov. 10, Dallas on Nov. 12, Los Angeles on Nov. 16, San Francisco on Nov. 20, New York City on Dec. 1, and Boston on Dec. 2. Attendees can register online at livepicture.com, or by calling 877-424-2832. (See related announcement.)

"Our work with Live Picture allows developers to enhance Web sites built on Oracle8i with interactive, high-quality images that draw users in and keep them engaged," said Shari Simon, vice president of Americas Alliances and Marketing at Oracle. "Live Picture's expertise in Internet imaging complements Oracle's deep understanding of data management. This is a powerful combination and a critical next step in the evolution of image-rich, database-driven Web sites."

"Live Picture's collaboration with Oracle is a major milestone in our strategy to build solutions that make images an active participant in every application," said Kate Mitchell, president and CEO of Live Picture. "The goal of this alliance is to give developers a unique and powerful advantage as they create Web sites that engage, excite and inspire. Oracle8i and Oracle interMedia provide an excellent starting place for this new generation of intelligent and visually compelling Internet sites."

With Oracle interMedia and the Live Picture Image Server, electronic commerce sites built on an Oracle8i database can answer shopper queries by returning dynamic, crystal-clear images as well as related documents and links that offer the chance for users to zoom in for a closer look. With just a mouse click, shoppers can view progressively detailed images of products for sale, examining them for quality and workmanship. For instance, an online shopper might click on a pair of high-top basketball shoes. Because the image is linked to a relational database, that single click can serve as a search for all similar high-top styles. This means shoppers can use images rather than just text strings to retrieve relevant content, resulting in satisfied customers who can make more informed purchases.

Other image-intensive intranet applications will also benefit. Military organizations can search for and examine zoomable satellite or security images, even controlling which users are allowed to view high-resolution versions that reveal confidential details. Online publishers can manage and track the contents of their constantly growing image archives, and can offer different subscription rates based on the quality of image resolution requested by their online readers. In fact, any company with a significant collection of images and image-laden documents will be able to streamline their asset management operations as a result of this collaboration. Live Picture Zoom images allow companies to efficiently store one multi-resolution file for all uses, including display on the Web, large-format displays, and high-quality printing.

Live Picture Zoom images and servers are based on the industry-standard Flashpix image file format and Internet Imaging Protocol (IIP). Developed by Live Picture in collaboration with Hewlett-Packard, Kodak and Microsoft, Flashpix and IIP transmit only the image details requested, rather than sending the entire high-resolution image.
